If you have spent years keeping a SharePoint environment alive and nobody outside IT knows your name, this one is for you.
The SharePoint Platform Specialist (SPPS) role puts one person in charge of an entire SharePoint platform: how it is built, who can get into it, how it performs, how it is documented, and how well the people using it actually understand it. Here is what the job asks for, where it is a strong fit, and where it might not be.
The Job in One Sentence
You own the WMD Directorate's SharePoint platform end to end. The directorate relies on it every day to track, share, and report time-sensitive information, and it runs across every classification enclave they use: the unclassified network, FBINET, SIPRNET, and JWICS.
That last part is what makes this role different from most SharePoint jobs. You are keeping one platform consistent and secure across four networks with four different sets of rules.
What the Day to Day Looks Like
Architecting site structures and building collaboration sites
Deploying solutions into production
Managing who has access to what, and applying FBI and DoD security controls
Monitoring platform performance and troubleshooting when something breaks
Rolling out platform enhancements
Running compliance audits
Designing training and teaching the people who use the platform
The Paperwork Half of the Job
Expect about as much writing as building. The posting calls for skill in drafting:
Concept of Operations documentation
Integrated Master Schedules
Configuration Management Plans
Risk Management Plans
Test Plans and Test Reports
Training curricula and training materials
If you like documentation, that is a big part of the appeal. If you have always handed it off to someone else, weigh that honestly before you apply.
The Technical Bar
The core requirements are specific:
Working knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft SQL Server
Experience administering SharePoint platforms across multiple classification enclaves
Experience building collaboration and information-sharing capabilities
Experience with configuration management, risk management, and systems engineering support
The ability to work under FBI security, information assurance, access control, and classification handling requirements
Multi-enclave experience is the requirement that narrows the field fastest. Plenty of people have run SharePoint well on a single network. Far fewer have kept it running correctly across classified environments at the same time.
Education and Certification
Required: a bachelor's degree in information technology, information systems, computer science, or a related field
Nice to have: a master's degree in one of those same fields
Required: a current CompTIA Security+ certification
Experience: 5 to 10 Years of Platform Ownership
The range is 5 to 10 years of related work, and the key word is ownership. You should have already run a SharePoint platform: built the architecture, deployed it, managed its users, and troubleshot it when things broke in production. Supporting a few team sites or answering permissions tickets on someone else's platform sits below this bar.
Clearance
This posting requires an active Top Secret clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access. Across SharePoint platform specialist roles in general, the clearance level depends on the customer and the data the platform protects, but for this one, the active TS is a must-have on day one.
Where and How You'll Work
On-site, full time at 18300 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA, or another FBI or contractor-approved space if required. The job needs stable access to equipment and systems, so plan on being in the office.
Hours generally fall between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, with occasional availability needed outside normal business hours.
Environment: mostly a temperature-controlled office. Some visits to areas of operations can involve extreme heat or cold, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, and loud noise.
Pay: the posting lists $183,000 to $185,000.
A Quick Self-Check
Have I owned a SharePoint platform end to end, or mostly maintained pieces of one?
Have I administered SharePoint across more than one classification enclave?
Am I comfortable with SQL Server alongside SharePoint?
Have I written CONOPS, configuration management, risk, or test documentation?
Have I built training and taught it to end users?
Do I hold an active Top Secret clearance and a current Security+?
Can I commit to working on-site in Triangle, VA?
If you answered yes to most of these, this role lines up with what you have already been doing. If you hesitated on several, that tells you where to grow next, and that is useful information too.
Where This Role May Not Be a Fit
You want a remote or hybrid schedule. This one is on-site.
You don't currently hold an active TS clearance.
You would rather stay purely technical. Documentation and training are a major share of the work.
You are early in your career. The 5 to 10 year range reflects real platform ownership.
The Bottom Line
If you have done platform administration work, you have the technical foundation and education, you hold the clearance, and you are drawn to the mix of technical work, documentation, and training, this could be the right fit.
